2013 Recap

last year, i set myself 24 goals, aiming for a 60% success.
http://enkiel.blogspot.ca/2012/12/goal-for-2013.html

Lets see how i fared first

Warmachine 1/1
1 goal which was not to buy new model until everything is painted. I resisted, and despite not painting anything, at least i didn't buy anything. Success

40k 0/3
Paint a few model from my Dark Eldar. In the end, i didn't paint dark eldar, i instead started a new Grey Knights army. Fail X3

Fantasy 4/13
Nurgle 3/3
Finishing my army + presentation tray for ND Open. Success
Play at least 10 games. Success. I didnt play them before the tournament, which bite me in the ass, but at least i played with the army.

Ogre 1/4
Well, this gonna be painfull, as i didn't really touch them, except to play with them once in awhile....

Finish Stonehorn. Failed. Didn't touch him at all.
new BSB. Failed. Didn't even start thinking about it
Tattooes. Failed. No real reason.
10 Games. Success!

O&G 0/6
Even worst than my Ogres, those werent touched, not even for playing....

Terrain 2/7

adding terrain to 40k Failed x2
Basecoat or paint 40k building Failed x2
Build and Paint 2 Tabletop Failed
Build and Paint 2 tabletop forest + add another terrain to my fantasy table. Success. I call it success because i fixed my forest problem by purchasing 4 already painted GW Forest, and also added a used skullmantle big ass terrain to my roster.

Total is 7/24 for a very bad 29%... Lets sets some goal that are actually possible, even with a "i dont wanna see anything warhammer related for the next 6 months" phase...

First tournament under 6th edition (1500-1650 pts)

I played my first "tournament" this weekend with my Dark Eldar at a friendly 40k day down at the store. I brought my Dark Eldar to try and see how well they can do outside my basement (my previous games were all agains my friend Orks).

I'm pretty proud to say that i went 2 wins and 1 draw with a far from competitive list (at least, imho).

Here's what i brought ;

Incubi Done !

So i spent some time working on my old Metal Incubi, switching their paint scheme to what i currently do with my army. The 10 models are complete, but i doubt i'll ever use the 10 of them. With those complete, i'm up to 1300 pts, which i think deserve an army shot.

First the incubi
Some dont have their base yet, they are painted, i just didnt take time to finish them

Then the army shot
Pretty crappy picture, but its the best i can do at 9pm

List of the month (Dark Eldar 1750 pts)

Not Burned out, just playing the game.

The past few months been pretty quiet on the painting side of the hobby. After many, many weeks playing Warmahordes, we switched to 40k, trying out our army that we only let out a few times (4-5 games maybe in 5th ed?).

I have roughly 1500 pts of completely painted Dark Eldar, with only a few units still unpainted (Hellions) or not bough yet (Reavers).

Here's my current V6 Dark Eldar list, 1750 pts of shooting goodness...

August come and gone. Incubi WIP #1

August is almost done, and i could say that except for the weekly WarmaHordes games, i didn't do much wargaming related.

But the past few days, with my vacation nearly done, i got some motivation to paint again, and this time i spent it painting Warhammer 40k, getting my army slowly to the 1750 pts mark painted.

Obviously, for those that didn't like my rusted up warriors, the incubi won't help them change their mind, but for the others, enjoy!

Obviously, their weapon's blade isnt finished yet, but i have no clue what color to paint them...

Tale of Painters ; Razorwind Jetfighter

Last few days were spent painting my Razorwind. I'm pretty happy with the result, as i tried pre-shading on a much larger scale, and it worked wonderfully. Not sure how good it is with different color, but its pretty good on yellow.

Note that the yellow was very hard to paint, both under the sun and the table light.

Here's a WIP of the yellow, before the whole paint scratching stuff. It's pretty much the best picture of the yellow i got.

Tale of Painters ; Talos Pain Engine

So during July, i painted a Talos Pain Engine. I was really looking forward to paint that model as i think its one of the best looking one in the Dark Eldar range. I'm pretty happy with the final result ;

Pretty happy about how all the color go together... Ok, there's ALOT of color, but i'm still happy.

The good ol' string job. A signature on my army so far.

For this one i didn't highlight the paint chip. But i did attempt a few new chips method using my rubber paint.

The red "bottle" at the model's bottom is painted in a way to have a very bright red, as if it was glowing...

Tale of Painters ; Warrior Units #3&4 Part 1

I started working on my last 2 units of Dark Eldar warriors last week, a bit later than expected. Sadly, last month's units didnt get any vote, but quite frankly, its easily understandable. My technique is sloppy with those, and its definately not for everyone's taste.

For this month, i decided to alter a bit my technique. First, My transport now have some yellow to distinguish them from one another, and i have some hope to add a little something to the units to "mark" them to one unit or another.

For the yellowish Venom, i plan on adding white to the chip, like everyone else does. the rest of the model will be like my previous two.

For the second Venom, i want to try something different, but i'm not sure what yet.

And here's my warriors in their current state. Nothing spectacular ; white primer and white airbrush. Rusting them up should start tonight, and i plan on trying that white highlight on the chips too.

Next month ; Talos Pain Engine and Razorwing Jetfighter. Once all is said and done, i should have about 1000 pts painted over 4 months.

100th Post!

For this milestone, i decided to go ahead, and get a group shot of every army i own, in their current state. Figured i could also talk about GW's new price hike, but i don't really feel like this post being a downer.

Ogre Kingdoms

Ogre were my first real army i started collecting, in 2008 or so. I have a bit of everything, and can easily field 5000+ points on the table. I won many small tournament with it (Especially since our new book was released), and i even went as far as to win Best General in a 40+ players event.

About 90% is painted.

Dark Elves

Dark Elves were an army i started back in 7th ed, when i was tired of loosing with my Ogres, and wanted a few wins to raise moral. It worked. It also allowed me to learn alot more about game (since Ogres were pretty basic back then, without cavalry, little shooting, and weird magic phase).

About 50% is painted, some to good standard

there's a few model i'm particulary proud of ; My cold one were painted scale by scale, My Cauldron's Witch Elves were painted to a standard i could never achieve again, and my favourite piece of all ; my Sorceress
Some color choice were perfect for that model

Dark Eldar

I decided that i wanted to start 40k a long time ago, but never really cared much to collect a complete army. I finally did lastr year, and i'm currently owning about 2000 pts of those elves in space. Not much is painted (or even assembled), but my goal is to get it slowly done, hoping to start playing for real with 6th ed (and when times permit... which shouldnt happen too often). Sadly, since everything i have painted to my current standard is currently displayed at my local store, there's no army shot available at this time.

Haemonculi painted 2 month ago

Orcs and Goblins

I always though that an Orc army was interesting. Not very competitive, but loads of fun and random stuff that can make each game truely unique, even with the same list. This one is my first true army with loads of conversion (and a theme!), which makes its progress slower than anything i've ever done. I did almost complete 2 chariot conversion, but nothing is finished. About 5 Orcs are painted.
Not much is painted, or even built!

Nurgle Carnival

This one is not really a secret, but it's something i plan on starting maybe this summer. Basically, i'm aiming for a mono-god Daemons army based on the Nurgle Carnival. With each model an unique conversion, this is one of those project that might never ever reach 1500 points, especially if they get released with the type of new model we've seen with the last few books (come on, who really wants to convert something like an ironblaster when the current model is so gorgeous?). I have tons of idea in store, with unit filler, presentation tray, and even unique model ideas.

Tale of Painters ; Warrior Units #2 Part 1

Quite frankly, i didn't really manage to have the control i was hoping with pigments, so i figured i'd go another way to get my rust done on my warriors.

Here's the result so far ;

Basically, i went sponge frienzy, added some watery rust, and voila!

I personally think its alot better looking than the previous technique, and it also alot less messy.

Tale of Painters ; Warriors units Part 3

Well, it's been a pretty productive month so far. I have to say i learned alot (especially about what not to do with pigments), and the result is my first finished warrior unit.

I'm pretty happy with the result, even if they are still a bit too rusted, and the base are, i dunno, weird. I think the color scheme is perfect, i just need to work a bit more on how i render it.

For the record, my picture taking ability didnt improve a single bit.

First, my complete unit and its transport.

Tale of Painters ; Warriors units Part 2

I've spent a few hours each night painting up my warriors ; learning new medium like pigment proven to be a lot more challenging than expected.

Tale of Painters ; Warriors units

For May, my goal is to paint 2 Warrior units with 2 Venom. Then, in June, i repeat the same goal. So after those two months, i should have 4 core units, with just enough spot for Wracks and/or Hellions (depending on which HQ i pick between an Haemonculus or the Baron). There will be nothing special about those Warrior (60 pts unit with Blaster upgrade), but i have magnetized the Venom's weapons.

Here is my units for May in their current state.

So far nothing special. I know some people would argue that you need cold or warm color in the shade and/or highlight, but i personally like the greyish shade i'm going for, and the rust should help bring some warmt to the model. Goal is to have them painted up next week, to be weathered into oblivion the following week, and then starting fresh with a new unit.

And some closer picture of their current state... still lots of detail/fixing to do.

Tale of Painters 2012 ; Haemonculus Completed

For 2012's summer, our local store is organizing a Tale of Painter for both Fantasy and 40k. With my Ogres pretty much completed, and my Orcs on an un-rushable hiatus, i decided to dust off my Dark Eldar and finally get ready for 40k.

Basically, the Tale of Painter is about painting as much in a category that we wants ;
April : Hero/Lord or HQ
May and June : Core or Troop
July : Special/Rare or Elite/Fast Attacks/Heavy Support

On the Table for the remaining of the Year

Waaagh! A Savage and Chariot themed Orc Army.

I was reading a while ago about someonep playing Dark Elf with 5-6 chariot and was succesful. I figured, if a stinky pointy ears guy riding geckos, there's no reason Orcs riding all might Boar couldnt do it better.

So this is why i decided to try it out, and just see how successful this can be. There's obviously alot of limitation, since Chariots are special, and you can only take 3 in a 2500 pts army. But there's alot more in the book that can do similar role.

List of The Month (Dark Eldar 1500 pts)

For this first 40k list of the month, i'm musing about what kind of list i can build with what i currently own. First lets face it, with a new edition just around the corner, its hard to purchase model you're not sure will work later on.

Eventful post, but no pictures

Yesterday been a pretty eventful night. First, i received what i ordered in january (finally) from GC-minis. With their free shipping gone, and their very long wait time (and lack of communication), its definately the last time i order from them. So i received ;
3xDark Eldar Venom
2x Hellion box
1x Talos

With this order, i think its safe to say i can play 1500 pts games with a relatively competitive list (for the current Edition, at least). I'll work on some list, and post what i'm planning to play later today.

First 40k tournament ever

Yesterday was my first ever tournament with 40k. It was a team tournament, with each player bringing 1000 pts (so 2000 vs 2000).

I kept the same list as my test game :
Archon with HuskBlade, PhantasmGrenadeLauncher, CombatDrug, Soul-Trap, ShadowField
5 Incubi with Klaivex and Bloodstone, riding a Raider with Night Shield, Flicker Field and GrislyTrophies
2x10 Wych with Shardnet and Impaler, Razorflails, Hekatrix with PhantasmGrenadeLauncher and Agoniser riding a Raider with Night Shield and Flicker Field
1 Ravager with NightShield and FlickerField.

My teammate had roughly :
1 warboss
1 bigmek with kustom force field
6 Meganobz
20 Shoota
20 Slugga

1 Defkoptas with Rokkit
2 Battlewagon with Hardcase

Scenario was homemade, with a primary, secondary and tertiary objective.

First 40k test game

I played my first game of 40k ever today against a store employee, using my list for tomorrow team tournament.

My list was as follow :
Archon with HuskBlade, PhantasmGrenadeLauncher, CombatDrug, Soul-Trap, ShadowField
5 Incubi with Klaivex and Bloodstone, riding a Raider with Night Shield, Flicker Field and GrislyTrophies
2x10 Wych with Shardnet and Impaler, Razorflails, Hekatrix with PhantasmGrenadeLauncher and Agoniser riding a Raider with Night Shield and Flicker Field
1 Ravager with NightShield and FlickerField.

He was playing chaos, with something like this :

Nurgle Daemon that spawn on a champion (sorry, still new to this)
Flying Daemon
1 Rhino with 10 chaos something, with tons of shooting.
1 Land Raider with 5 guys (2 flamer)
1 Obliterator (i think... it come from deepstrike, and just shoot).

Kill Point scenario, with Spearhead deployment. Terrain was basically 9 ruins, deployed in a 3x3 square.

All your bases are belong to us.

Since the rest of my army wont be here before the 30th, i started working on bases. I'm going for an industrial look, with relatively the same paint technique as my Reaver, except that i think i'll switch the white with black.
