Best and Worst army in Warhammer , version 2013

A while ago (January 2012), i posted what i believed was the race ranking in the warhammer fantasy universe. Obviously, since then, a lot of book were release, so much changed.

A link to the last post ;

And now, the review ;

Warrior of Chaos
They are still very strong. It’s hard to say that the book did them any arm, giving them access to a cheap flying monster, and keeping the army relatively cheap (considering their stats). I’d go ahead and say that they remains in the top tier.

Skaven
Still a very strong army, nothing really changed with them, especially since they do wonder against elite army (such as High Elves) with their dreaded 13 and just-stupidly-good abomination.

Daemon of Chaos
They took a dive. Are they competitive? Of course, but there’s no real auto-win combination anymore, which is very good for the balance, but not so good for the army as a whole.

Dark Elves
Definitely dropping from the tier 1. they are still good, but if you want a toughness 3 army, there’s better pick with the renewed High Elves.

Empire
They have it all ; good 1+ cavalry, good monstrous cavalry, good shooting, good magic. It’s hard to balance everything together, but no matter what you choose, you’re still winning.

Dwarfs
How to love them? They are so boring with their aweful movement and crazy defense, you just want to rush them and hope it ends soon. Problem is that they are still the king of warmachine, and a top tier 2 army.

Ogres Kingdoms
Still balanced, even against newer army. The butcher tax, the lack of mount and the high price on their heroes make them a deathstar army most often than not, so most of the time, a well rounded army will be able to control such army.

Lizardmen
With their new book just around the corner, they remain a solid Tier 2 with their magic ability, their resilience and the fact that you can abuse your opponent to no end with the Slann. It will most likely ends soon, but who knows.

Vampire Count
Sadly, the army lack in some department. They definitely have one of the worst core available (even if a gigantic horde of zombie sound like fun, especially with resurrect that can bring 20 a turn easily), but the rest can help them (like double terrorgheist or unstoppable Lord that kill anything it touch). There’s many different build available, but none is impossible to beat.

Orcs & Goblins
I love the army, simply because it’s the most random army (closely followed by the new Daemons), and is just pure fun in a non-competitive environment. When you have to win at all cost, its a lot harder, and usually, the army ends up being just like the other ; big unit of big ‘uns, another big unit (black orcs or cavalry), and a few Goblins/warmachines.

High elves
They were in the tier 3? Forget it now, they are back at the top. Three words : Banner of Broken-ness (a word? Probably not). That banner alone breaks an army that would be bottom tier 1/top tier 2 anyway. Their Phoenix are great (what, a character that can come back to live isn’t nice?) and their toughness 3 is compensated by a Bird that gives -1 Strenght to UNITS within 6’’…

Tomb Kings
Sadly, they are still broken beyond repair. A few build can do some damage (like 6+ Sphinx) but overall there isn’t much that can be done with that army. A few tweaks could fix them, but you better wait for a new book instead of waiting for that tweak.

Bretonnia
With unit getting better, its hard for them to break units on the charge, and once that charge is done, S3 just isn’t cutting it. With some luck, a new book will help them, but its still far away.

Beastmen
A few possible build ; minotaur deathstar, big units, herdstone… There’s no win-it-all list, but a few win-under-right-circunstance.

Wood Elf
Really, not much to say about them. They are what they are ; a way too old book to be competitive. Anything that can win game, you seen it before.

So this leave me with my new ranking ;

Warrior of Chaos
High Elves
Skaven
Empire
Dark Elves

Ogres Kingdoms.
Dwarfs
Lizardmen
Vampire Count
Daemon of Chaos

Orcs And Goblins
Tomb Kings
Bretonnia
Beastmen
Wood Elves
